The C.L.E.A.N. Closed Loop Solvent Recycling System is an example of a recycling alternative that solved a problem. This is an important system, developed for the Printing Industry across Canada.

Are you currently involved in a recycling program? Are you in our Loop?

The C.L.E.A.N. Alliance has been providing satisfied customers with state-of–the-art recycling alternatives for over seven years.

As a member of Printing Industry in Ontario for twenty years, I have first-hand knowledge of the environmental challenges. These insights led to the recycling alternative provided by The C.L.E.A.N. Closed Loop Solvent Recycling System.

The industry was contributing to the formation of greenhouse gases through the release of tons of Volatile Organic Compounds from uncontrolled solvents. There were immediate health and safety concerns involved with handling these solvent laden wipers. The VOCs released from the wipers were known to cause respiratory and neurological disorders.

Improper storage and handling could lead to the wipers spontaneously combusting. There were explosions at several laundry facilities. Industrial laundry facilities were dropping out of the solvent wiper business. Printers would have to use more costly and less efficient disposable wipers, which presented an even greater environmental hazard.

Closed Loop Solvent Recycling Alternative

The C.L.E.A.N. Closed Loop Solvent Recycling System was developed and refined over the last eight years as a joint effort with G&K Services Canada Inc. and GFL. The Alliance had to provide an alternative means of disposal to the traditional method of incinerating waste solvent.

The recycling alternative needed to offer immediate and tangible benefits to the printing industry.

Cost savings resulted from more streamlined and profitable operations, because reusable wipers would ultimately cost less than disposable wipers. Additionally, the C.L.E.A.N. Closed Loop Solvent Recycling System enabled printers to comply with the government’s tightened restrictions on the handling of VOCs. The end result is a recycling alternative that improved worker safety, reduced environmental contamination and lowered costs.

At present, C.L.E.A.N. processes in excess of 30,000 liters of solvent from 1.2 million reusable wipers and waste blanket wash bi-monthly. At a VOC level of 100%, C.L.E.A.N.’s process would prevent the release of 1,305 tonnes of VOC per year.

Award Winning Closed Loop Solvent Recycling SystemC.L.E.A.N. and its Alliance Partners received the Impact Award for reducing 1,305 tonnes of V.O.C.’s annually and were recognized by the Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments. National and provincial organizations took notice. We know how important it is to recycle waste streams! C.L.E.A.N. Closed Loop Solvent Recycling System thinking is simple.
